Brad Pitt’s Thirty-Year Love Affair with Horses: Hollywood’s Best-Kept Secret

Sommaire

When filming Legends of the Fall in 1994, Brad Pitt had never sat on a horse. Three decades later, the American actor has become an accomplished rider and owner of a sprawling equestrian estate spanning several hectares in Provence. His is a quiet passion, one he describes as his greatest “escape” beyond the glare of Hollywood.

1994: The Encounter That Changed Everything

To play Tristan Ludlow in Legends of the Fall, Brad Pitt spent three months at a Montana ranch working with an equestrian coach. He learned to gallop, to vault, to master the fundamentals of Western dressage. What was meant to be mere technical preparation became something far more transformative. “I realised that horses don’t lie,” he confided to Vanity Fair in 2007. “They read you like an open book.”

The Provence Estate: A Private Sanctuary

In 2008, Brad Pitt acquired Château Miraval with Angelina Jolie. Beyond its celebrated vineyards, the estate houses several stables and a collection of riding horses. The actor rides there regularly alongside his children, particularly Pax, who shares his equestrian passion. Following their separation in 2016, Pitt is understood to have retained access to the riding facilities and returns several times a year.

How Horses Saved Him

In an interview with GQ in 2019, Brad Pitt spoke candidly about his difficult years following his divorce and recovery from alcohol. “I found a kind of peace I thought I’d lost,” he explained, reflecting on his early morning rides. “A horse doesn’t judge you. It demands that you be fully present, absolutely in the moment.” An informal equine therapy of sorts, one he is said to have pursued at the Sundance wellness centre, founded by Robert Redford.

Passing the Tradition to the Next Generation

His adopted son Pax Jolie-Pitt now competes in amateur show jumping. Several photographs circulated on social media show him in riding attire, approved helmet in place, aboard French saddle horses. Pitt is said to have introduced him to horsemanship early on, following a principle imparted by his own coach: “You learn to know a horse before you ever mount it.”

A Passion Kept Private, Never Publicised

Unlike other actors such as Robert Redford or Viggo Mortensen, Brad Pitt has never made equestrian sport a public statement. No magazine features, no saddle selfies, no commercial partnerships. This discretion is integral to his relationship with the equestrian world: a private realm where he is simply a man and his horse, nothing more.
