Flies and Horseflies: Why Your Horse Struggles to Defend Itself, and How to Help

As soon as warm weather arrives, your horse spends entire days flicking its head, stamping its feet and lashing its tail at the air. Against flies and especially horseflies, it fights back, but it nearly always loses. Not from lack of effort: these insects are simply built to win. Here’s why, and what actually helps.

The answer in one sentence

Your horse defends poorly against flies and horseflies because its natural weapons (tail, skin twitches, head, hooves) cannot cover its whole body and tire quickly, whilst insects return relentlessly and bite at spots it cannot reach. Effective help means combining physical barriers, appropriate repellents and above all environmental management (manure, stagnant water), rather than relying on a single product.

Why its natural defences fall short

The horse is not defenceless: its tail sweeps the flanks and hindquarters, the skin muscle twitches to dislodge a landed insect, it shakes its head, stamps its front feet and seeks shade or wind. The problem is geometry. The tail cannot reach the head, chest, belly or inside of the legs: precisely the zones horseflies target. Result: constant harassment that the animal can never fully stop.

The horsefly is a special case. Unlike the housefly which lands and laps, the female horsefly cuts the skin and drinks blood: its bite is painful, causes bleeding, and the insect persists until it finishes feeding. A horse may then become restless, gallop across the field, injure itself on a fence or become difficult to ride. This is not tantrum: it is pain.

Who are the summer attackers?

Flies, the constant irritation

The housefly and stable fly gather around eyes, nostrils and wounds to feed on secretions. They do not pierce the skin but cause continuous irritation and, crucially, carry germs from one horse to another. They are responsible for worsening eye problems by spreading conjunctivitis and discharge.

Horseflies, the bleeding bite

Large, fast, active in hot humid weather, horseflies target the neck, chest, belly and legs. Their bite is the most painful of all and can cause marked local reaction. They are the main culprit behind summer panic episodes in the field.

Midges, biting midges and mosquitoes

Tiny biting midges (culicoides) strike at dawn and dusk. They lie at the heart of a major summer skin condition: sweet itch, an allergy to their saliva that makes the horse scratch itself raw, particularly at the base of mane and tail. Mosquitoes and blackflies add to the picture depending on region and humidity.

Why these bites are more than a nuisance

What they can trigger

  • Disease transmission. Flies and biting insects are vectors: they spread germs and viruses. Flies are particularly involved in spreading equine sarcoid, the most common skin tumour in horses.
  • Skin lesions. Scratching from sweet itch, scabs, secondary infection of bites: the skin becomes a gateway for bacteria.
  • Eye damage. Tearing, conjunctivitis, even corneal ulcer when the horse rubs its irritated eye against an object.
  • Exhaustion and weight loss. A horse defending itself all day eats less, rests poorly and can lose condition in summer, the very season when it should be thriving on grass.

What makes good protection

The real criteria

  • Coverage of sensitive areas. Useful protection targets first the head, eyes, belly and legs, not just the back.
  • Real duration of action. A repellent effective for 2 hours in intense heat and sweat is worth less than a product that lasts all day. Check the stated duration, not just the fragrance.
  • Skin tolerance. Healthy skin, no wounds, test on a small area: a product that burns or dries out makes the problem worse.
  • Action at source. The best protection reduces insect numbers (manure and water management) rather than simply repelling them from the horse.

How to truly help

Physical barriers first

This is the most reliable foundation. Fly mask (protects eyes and ears), lightweight mesh sheet or tail cover, head fringe: they create a mechanical barrier that neither fly nor horsefly can breach. Repellents, as backup

Sprays, lotions and roll-ons extend protection to exposed areas. Their effectiveness depends on the active ingredient, concentration and reapplication frequency, which should follow rain or heavy sweating. The case of veterinary insecticides (including Butox)

Some owners turn to insecticides based on deltamethrin, such as Butox, highly sought for flies, lice and ticks. Essential caution: this type of product was originally intended for cattle and its use in horses amounts to off-label use only to be undertaken on veterinary advice, with precise dilution and strict precautions. Act on the environment, the most underestimated weapon

This is where the battle is truly won. Flies lay eggs in manure and decaying matter; mosquitoes and midges in stagnant water. Mucking out boxes and paddocks, removing droppings, emptying troughs and pools that grow stagnant, keeping the muck heap away from living areas: reducing larval breeding sites cuts the insect population far more durably than any spray. Why does my horse suddenly gallop around the field in summer?

Most often, it’s a horsefly. Its bite is sharp and the horse flees to escape it. Shaded shelter, a mask and a sheet limit these reactions and the risk of injury on fencing.

Are essential oils enough?

They may help against mild pressure, but their duration of action is short and variable. On a heavily exposed horse, they work better as a complement to physical barriers than alone.
