Frankel’s Groom: The Man Who Never Got Over Greatness

Sommaire

Newmarket, October 2012. Seven in the morning, the air still sharp with cold. Shane Fetherstonhaugh tightens the girth on Frankel for the last time. Four years of saddling this horse every single day. Four years of reading his mood before he showed it himself. Today, it ends. The horse who never lost is being retired. And Shane knows, nothing will ever be the same again.

Fourteen Races, Fourteen Victories

Born in 2008 in Suffolk, Frankel never tasted defeat. Over eighteen months of racing, he accumulated fourteen consecutive victories, including the Two Thousand Guineas, the Sussex Stakes and the Queen Anne. Racing statisticians awarded him a Timeform rating of 147, the highest ever given to a modern Flat horse. But these numbers tell nothing of the man who prepared him each morning.

Four Years of Silent Understanding

Shane Fetherstonhaugh was not his trainer. Not his race jockey either. He was his work rider, the quiet man in the background, invisible to the media yet more intimate with Frankel than anyone else. He knew the exact pressure needed on the bit, the rhythm of each breath, the precise moment to ease contact and let that monstrous stride fully open.

“He always knew when you were hiding something,” Shane would say later. “If you were stressed, he wouldn’t go. You had to be honest with him.”

The Morning He Broke

On 20 October 2012, Frankel runs his Champion Stakes at Ascot. Victory number fourteen. Immediate retirement, destination Banstead Manor Stud, where his progeny would soon command some of the highest fees in the world. As the horsebox pulled away, Shane stood motionless in the parade ring. Minutes later, his colleagues found him sitting against a stable door, weeping silently.

He never spoke of that morning. But he would never ride another horse of that calibre again.

Why a Frankel Leaves a Scar

In racing circles, they say a groom who has known true greatness never really comes back down. Every other horse feels ordinary afterwards. Shane Fetherstonhaugh continues his work, quietly, methodically, but those who know him have seen the old black headcollar in his tack box, marked with a single word in faded marker pen: Frankel. He never parts with it.
